Baby’s Dental Care

Taking care of your little one’s teeth should be a priority from the vert first days, even before they start to get their teeth at all.  Here are some guidelines to get your baby going on the path to health teeth for the rest of their life.

JUST SAY “NO” TO BOTTLES IN BED

Avoid ever putting your baby down to sleep with a sippy cup or bottled filled with anything other than water.  Formula, milk, juice or any sweet liquids sit in the mouth as a result and lead to “baby bottle tooth decay.” Rather, let your baby finish their bottle prior to bedtime, and if putting them to bed with a bottle is unavoidable, make sure it is filled with water.

BE SURE YOUR BABY DRINKS FLUORIDATED WATER

Make sure that your baby is drinking fluoridated water, because by the time they reach 6 months of age, they will need the fluoride to build healthy teeth enamel.  If you live in an area where the water is fluoridated, this is typically enough for them to get all that they need. Bottled water typically does not contain fluoride, so be aware of that.  If you are unsure, make sure you take your questions to your paediatrician or dentist.

CLEAN YOUR BABY’S GUMS

Wipe your baby’s gums twice daily with a clean, wet soft cloth before they get their first teeth.  You can expect the first tooth to erupt at the average age of 6 months. Don’t panic if your 6 month old hasn’t gotten their teeth yet though, some infants don’t get their teeth until after a year! Others will get their first tooth as young as 3 months!

BRUSH NEW TEETH

When they get their first teeth, you can clean them with a children’s toothbrush, which is soft and flexible.  Be sure to clean their entire mouth though, not just the new teeth!

SEE A DENTIST

First tooth, or first birthday, whichever comes first, marks the time for your baby to see the dentist for the first time!  Expect your child to have their mouth examined and give advice on any concerns, like thumb sucking.  Your dentist will give you a few pointers on brushing and make sure you are doing a great job. Regular exams are a must for your child’s oral health and for the rest of their lives!
