Brushing Basics

Brushing your teeth is an important skill for both children and adults alike.  Be sure that both you and your kids are brushing with the right tools and techniques!

SHOULD PARENTS HELP CHILDREN BRUSH THEIR TEETH?

Absolutely!  Especially younger kids, children need guidance to brush their teeth properly.  Help your children brush and even hold their toothbrush for them. One of the best ways to achieve proper oral hygiene is to brush together as a family.  You can show kids that brushing can be a fun event for the kids, making it a part of their daily routine and encourage healthy oral hygiene habits as they grow up.

HOW LONG SHOULD WE BRUSH?

It helps to remember the ‘2’s’:  2 times a day for 2 minutes each time. This applies to every member of the family.

Making brushing fun should be a priority.  Sometimes playing a song that is the right length can encourage kids to brush, and there are many good resources online for short videos – like www.2min2x.orgthat make brushing for kids fun!  Adults need to abide by these tips too, but most only brush for a minute or less!

WHEN SHOULD I BRUSH?

Brushing right away can help prevent damaging sugar caused by starchy foods like potato chips from creating cavities.  Children might not have the availability to brush at school after lunch or a snack, so it is important to pack healthy foods that are lower risk for causing cavities.  Be sure the family uses fluoride toothpaste in the morning and before bed each day. You will be helping them to take the right steps in protecting their teeth and gums.

WHAT IS THE BEST TECHNIQUE FOR BRUSHING?

There are specific brushing techniques that ensure you are cleaning your teeth and gums properly.

  • Use a circular or elliptical motion to brush one or two teeth at a time, gradually working your way around the entire mouth.
  • The toothbrush should be held at a 45 degree angle to the teeth and used to gently brush each one.  Brush the outside surface, inside surface, at chewing surface of each tooth as well as the tongue and along the gum line.
  • Teach your children about improper brushing, specifically that they should not brush with a back and forward motion.  Show them the proper way, improper brushing will cause the gums to recede and the root surface to be tender.

Teaching your kids at a young age these proper techniques are necessary for a life-long healthy routine in oral hygiene.  Be sure to ask your dentist if you have any questions.
