Oral Health Information

Oral Care During Pregnancy

Pregnancy causes unexpected oral health changes as a result of fluctuating hormone levels, so it is important to see your dentist if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy. The increase in estrogen and progesterone during pregnancy can exaggerate the way gum tissues react to plaque, so maintaining proper oral hygiene habits during pregnancy is important.

HOW DOES PLAQUE BUILD-UP AFFECT ME?

If the plaque is not removed, it can cause red swollen and tender gums that are likely to bleed and exhibiting signs of gingivitis.  Pregnancy gingivitis impacts most pregnant women to some degree, and typically surfaces in the second month of pregnancy. If you already have gingivitis, pregnancy will make the symptoms worse.  Untreated, gingivitis will lead to a more serious form of gum disease known as periodontitis, which could result in bone loss.

HOW DOES GINGIVITIS AFFECT MY BABY’S HEALTH?

Excess bacteria in the bloodstream is linked to preterm delivery and low birth weight babies.  The bacteria can travel to the uterus and trigger the production of the chemical prostaglandins, a contributing factor to premature labour.

HOW CAN I PREVENT GINGIVITIS?

By keeping the teeth clean, especially near the gum line, and having regular dental visits you can help to prevent gingivitis.  Brush with a fluoride toothpaste at least twice per day or after every meal. Flossing is also important. Proper nutrition will also keep the oral cavity healthy, including getting enough vitamin C and B12.

WHAT ARE PREGNANCY TUMOURS?

Pregnancy tumours are a possibility with pregnant women due to an inflammatory response i the gums.  These non-cancerous growths form between the teeth when the gums become irritated. If the tumours are left alone, they will shrink after the baby is delivered.  If the tumour is uncomfortable and interviews with normal hygiene procedures of chewing, your dentist might opt to remove it.

ARE THERE ANY DENTAL PROCEDURES I SHOULD AVOID?

The regular exam and cleanings should be performed throughout the pregnancy, but non emergency procedures should be left for the the second trimester.  Emergencies that create severe pain can be treated at any point, but your obstetrician should be consulted during any operating that might involve anaesthesia or medication.  X-ray should be permitted only in emergency situations. Non-necessary procedures should be left until after the baby’s birth to minimize risk. It is best to discuss and determine any treatment plan with your dentist.
