Oral Health Information

Oral Care and Sports Dentistry

If you are a professional athlete, or someone who just enjoys being active, it is important to protect the face, neck, head, and of course the mouth.  By taking the appropriate protective measures, you greatly reduce the risk of serious injuries and dental repairs that could result from playing your favourite sport.

WHAT SPORTS POSE A THREAT TO ORAL HEALTH?

Sports that presents the chance of collision or contact with another team player or surface require a mouthguard.  Any collision could potentially impact the teeth, jaws, and oral soft tissues. Sports like lacrosse, football, basketball, soccer, hockey and boxing are on the list of contact potential activities. Naturally, it is not limited to the list, and other activities like biking, skateboarding and inline skating are also high risk for oral injuries.

HOW DO MOUTHGUARDS PROTECT MY MOUTH?

Custom mouthguards correctly fit the upper teeth with a soft flexible material that protects against serious injuries like jaw fractures, broken teeth, cerebral hemorrhage and neck injuries.  The guard prevents the lower jaw from being jammed up into the upper jaw or back into the temporomandibular joint. They can also prevent lacerations (cutting) and bruising of cheeks and lips.  They also have the potential to reduce the severity of concussions as well.

WHAT OTHER TYPES OF PROTECTION DO I NEED?

Helmets also play an important role when participating in impact or speed sports.  A properly fitted helmet can protect against head, facial and neck injuries. Helmets should be fitted correctly and worn property.  Some masks require more protection like face masks and body pads.

WHAT DO I DO IF I EXPERIENCE TRAUMA TO MY MOUTH?

If you experience an oral injury, including cuts to the lips gums and cheeks, seek medical attention.  Breaking, chipping and losing a tooth should be treated as soon as possible. Fast action could save a tooth by implanting it back in or fixing the break or crack.  Inform your dentist if you partake in sports and recreational activities. Your dentist will give you tips for keeping your mouth, head, face and neck safe during these activities.  Mouth injuries can be costly and painful, so it is best to take the most precautions possible.
