Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)

IS WORK OR SCHOOL STRESSING YOU OUT?

When you are stressed, you might be grinding your teeth at night through a condition known as bruxism.  Characterized by a clenching of the jaw or grinding of the teeth, it is a habitual behaviour that can be triggered by stress.  Untreated, it will lead to health problems. Damage to the teeth, gums, and temporal mandibular joint.

WHAT CAUSES BRUXISM?

Grinding teeth is caused by a number of factors.  Commonly stress, but also medical conditions and certain medications.

WHAT ARE SIGNS OF BRUXISM?

If you have it, you might not be aware of it.  Only 5% of those affected by bruxism and teeth grinding develop symptoms like headaches and jaw pain. A partner or parent might hear it at night as it can be quite loud.

Bruxism and teeth grinding results in abnormal wear patterns on the teeth, resulting in sensitive teeth and notching at the gum lines.  It can go as far as to cause fractures and is a significant cause of tooth loss and gum recession.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF BRUXISM?

Symptoms will vary depending on the person, but typically include (but are not limited to) stress and tension, anxiety, depression and insomnia.  Physical manifestations include (but are not limited to) headaches, sore jaw, earaches, and eating disorders. If left untreated, the teeth eventually become shorter and blunter and the facial muscles can become chronically tightened and painful leading to temporomandibular disorders (TMD/TMJ) including arthritis.

HOW IS BRUXISM DIAGNOSED?

Teeth grinding is usually during a routine exam, the dentist will notice signs and suggest further investigations.

HOW IS BRUXISM TREATED?

A definitive cure for bruxism and teeth grinding is not always possible, but the symptoms can be reduced through proper treatment like that of a mouthguard, Botox treatment, biofeedback devices, and bite adjustments.  Damaged teeth can also be repaired.
