Dental Bridges

A ‘Dental Bridge’ is sometimes the best way to fill an empty space in your mouth where a tooth has been removed. Filling the gap contributes to more than achieving a nicer smile, it might affect your chewing or speaking abilities. If you are missing a tooth or multiple teeth, a fixed bridge could be an option as well.

A bridge is a dental appliance that works to replace missing teeth.  Essentially, it ‘bridges’ a gap between your natural teeth with a false one.  It can be made from a number of different materials, including gold, porcelain, alloys or a combination thereof.

Traditionally, fixed bridges consist of a false tooth (or teeth) fused between two natural teeth.  The natural teeth are typically crowned or capped creating a stable foundation for which the bridge can sit.  An implant bridge, however, is typically fastened to two or more implants on opposite sides and are directly fixed into the bone tissue.

Bridges are also known as “fixed partial dentures”, but are not removable by the patient.

Missing teeth can result in difficulty chewing or speaking.  The space can also trigger surrounding natural teeth to move out of position, making them more susceptible to gum disease and tooth decay resulting in further tooth loss.  By installing a fixed bridge, you eliminate these problems and help to maintain the natural shape of your face.

Having a bridge created and inserted takes several steps depending on the need of the patient.  The dentist needs to create the foundation for the bridge to attach to, and then the bridge itself, in an aesthetically pleasing and functional way.  This time frame takes multiple visits and can span two to four weeks depending on the circumstances of the bridge.

A bridge relies strongly on the foundation in which it has been planted – so maintaining proper oral health is even more important for individuals with bridges.  If you have a bridge, it is imperative that you brush twice per day thoroughly for at least 2 minutes each time and also that you see your dentist every 6 months.  Flossing with floss threaders is also recommended to clean between the bridge and adjacent teeth and gums. Your fixed bridge, when properly taken care of, will last as long as eight to ten years, or even longer.
