Dental X-Rays and Digital Radiology

Dental radiographs – also known as x-rays – are a necessary diagnostic tool that provide information that a regular dental exam just cannot cover.  An x-ray can reveal a number of hidden dental abnormalities and pathologies that will complete an exam and contribute to an accurate treatment plan.  It is a safe procedure that takes only a few minutes, and can be life saving in some circumstances.

X-rays can reveal minor issues like poor root position, hidden decay,  problems within a tooth and below the gum line, as well as developmental abnormalities.  They can also identify more serious issues, like abscesses, bone loss, or even cancer.

By checking for these issues regularly, you may catch an issue at an early stage saving you time,  money and even discomfort, in the long run.

ARE DENTAL X-RAYS SAFE?

You may have heard that x-rays expose you to unnecessary levels of radiation.  The fact of the matter is, you are exposed to natural radiation in your environment on an ongoing basis.

While dental x-rays do produce a low level of radiation, the levels are so low that they are considered safe.  Even so, dental clinics will take the necessary precautions to ensure that the exposure is as little as possible, covering the body with a lead apron and utilizing a technology that is fast and takes the least amount of time.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD DENTAL X-RAYS BE TAKEN?

The nice thing about dental x-rays is that you typically don’t need to do them with every exam.  One set of x-rays might be good for 3-5 years. If you are visiting a dental office for the first time, they will likely take a set of x-rays to give them a baseline and detect any issues right off the bat.

Beyond that, your medical history, age, results from a dental exam, and risk of dental disease will all coordinate to determine when your next x-rays will coincide.
