Guided Biofilm Therapy

Also known as GBT

Getting your teeth cleaned can be thought of as a painful and unpleasant experience. With our goal of making your appointment as pain-free and comfortable as possible, we are excited to introduce Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) as a new cleaning process within our clinic.

We are proud to be one of the first few clinics not only in Calgary, but across Canada, to have this process become our standard  method of hygiene cleaning – at no additional cost.

GBT uses a new technology, EMS Airflow, that reduces the need for traditional hand tool scraping and messy polishes, providing a more comfortable way of cleaning. The combination of warm water, air and soft cleaning powder is more gentle to the teeth, gums, and soft tissues, making it efficient and effective.

This new gentle cleaning process is suitable for people with braces, crowns, bridges, veneers, and implants alike.

The process will allow you less time in the chair in the short-run, and fewer visits to the clinic in the long-run.

What is Biofilm and Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)?

Biofilm is a sticky and colourless film made up of bacteria that coats your teeth. When biofilm has matured and spread enough to be seen by the naked eye, that is what we know of as plaque. Biofilm is the main cause for cavities, periodontal (gum) disease, and infections. Improper care or awareness can risk bacteria or infection leading to your bloodstream, which can increase chances of larger health issues such as cardiovascular disease, Alzheimers, and diabetes.

GBT is an 8-step process using a cleaning solution and airflow technology, to remove biofilm without damaging or scraping your teeth. The guided process removes biofilm before it can develop into anything further.

To give you a simplified metaphor, if biofilm is like slimy algae coating a rock at the bottom of a river stream, think of cleaning it with a soapy-solution power spray versus scraping or rubbing it off with traditional tools.

What will be different during my cleaning appointment?

Your hygienist will apply a purple colored coating onto the surfaces of your teeth, called Discloser. This will reveal and highlight areas of present biofilm bacteria that will guide the cleaning. The discloser also provides a great visual for you to see what areas you might be missing at home.

Instead of using traditional hand scraping and polishing tools, our team will be using the new AIRFLOW units that clean with the use of warm water, air, and a non-abrasive cleaning powder called Erythritol. The cleaning will feel like a warm mist, and will be conducted by one of three airflow handpieces (Airflow, Perioflow, and Piezon PS), each used to clean various tooth surfaces, deep pockets between the teeth and gums, and tongue – providing you a full mouth cleaning.

You will walk away from your appointment not only feeling the difference with your perfectly smooth teeth, but also seeing an immediate difference with noticeably whiter teeth.
