How Flossing Protects Your Teeth and Gums

Calgary Dentist Guide to Proper Flossing for Better Oral Health

Flossing is an essential—yet often overlooked—part of a healthy dental routine. Many people don’t floss regularly or skip it entirely, increasing their risk of gum disease, tooth decay, and chronic oral health problems. Flossing once a day can significantly improve your long-term dental wellness and support a healthy smile for life.

Calgary Dentist Recommendations for Daily Flossing

Why Should I Floss?

Flossing removes plaque and debris from areas your toothbrush simply can’t reach—specifically between the teeth and under the gumline. By cleaning these tight spaces, flossing helps prevent gum disease, reduces bad breath, and polishes tooth surfaces for a cleaner, healthier mouth.

How Often Should I Floss?

Flossing should be done at least once per day, ideally for 2–3 minutes, and most effectively right before bed. Consistency is key, especially for preventing plaque buildup in hard-to-reach areas.

Choosing the Best Floss for Your Teeth

There are several types of dental floss, and each can effectively remove plaque:
• Dental tape or wide floss – Ideal for patients with more space between teeth or with bridgework.
• Waxed floss – Easier to guide between tight contact points.
• Unwaxed floss – Produces a squeaking sound when teeth are clean.
• Bonded unwaxed floss – Less fraying but more prone to tearing than waxed floss.
• Pre-threaded flossers/floss holders – Great for children, patients with limited dexterity, or caregivers assisting someone else.

Children should begin flossing as soon as two teeth touch.

What Is the Proper Flossing Technique?

There are two dentist-approved flossing methods:
The Spool Method
Wrap an 18-inch piece of floss around the middle finger of one hand, with the remaining floss wrapped around the opposite middle finger. As you clean between each tooth, shift the floss to a fresh section.
Tie an 18-inch piece of floss into a loop using three knots. Insert your fingers (excluding thumbs) into the loop. Use index fingers to guide floss between lower teeth and thumbs for upper teeth. This method is especially helpful for those with limited dexterity.

• Avoid side-to-side sawing motions. Instead, slide the floss gently up and down along each tooth.
• Curve the floss into a “C” shape, allowing it to slide slightly under the gumline.
• Some mild bleeding or discomfort may occur when you first start flossing regularly. This should improve within 1–2 weeks. If it continues, consult your Calgary dentist.

Water Flossers vs. Traditional Flossing

Should I Use a Water Pick?

A water pick (oral irrigator) should not replace brushing or traditional flossing because it does not remove plaque effectively. However, water picks are valuable for:
• Cleaning around braces
• Accessing hard-to-reach areas
• Delivering antibacterial rinses for patients with gum disease
