Tooth Erosion

WHAT CAUSES TOOTH EROSION?

Tooth erosion is caused by acids, which can come from a number of sources.  Soft drinks, fruit juices and any food or drink high in sugars contribute to high levels of acid.  Additionally, medical conditions like acid reflux and bulimia will increase levels of stomach acid in the mouth.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF TOOTH EROSION?

Tooth erosion can present in a variety of ways. Below are some common signs and symptoms:

  • Sensitivity— Once the protective enamel starts to wear away, a twinge of pain becomes associated with hot and cold or sweet foods and drinks.  The more enamel that is lost, the more sensitive the tooth.
  • Discolouration—When the under layer of tooth – the dentin – is exposed, it appears yellow.
  • Rounded teeth—The tooth looks ‘rounded’
  • Transparency—Front teeth will become transparent near the edges.
  • Cracks—Rough areas and cracks appear on the surface of the tooth.
  • Cupping—Chewing surfaces will exhibit small dents and fillings will appear to be rising up out of the tooth itself.

WHAT CAN I DO TO PREVENT TOOTH EROSION?

Preventing tooth erosion stems from proper oral care.  Cut down your consumption of sugary drinks, and when you do have them drink them quickly and through a straw.  Don’t hold them in your mouth or swish them around. Rinse your mouth with water after and wait one hour after consumption to brush your teeth so that the mouth has a chance to neutralize.  You can also chew sugar free gum to help stimulate saliva production for tooth remineralization. Use a soft toothbrush when you brush and use a toothpaste high in fluoride. Children should avoid sippy cups with sugary drinks

HOW CAN I DEAL WITH THE SENSITIVITY CAUSED BY TOOTH EROSION?

Specially formulated toothpaste for tooth sensitivity can be effective in decreasing sensitivity.  You can also purchase enamel building products, but be sure to check with your dentist before trying anything new.

Tooth erosion presents differently in everyone, so make sure you speak with your dentist about what you can do to minimize the impact of tooth erosion.
