Tooth Whitening

Tooth whitening is a non-invasive and fairly easy procedure for brightening the smile from stains and discolouration.  Having whiter teeth has become one of the most popular aesthetic concerns for dental patients, so a number of whitening procedures have evolved in response.  The most popular method is a take home kit system that whitens the teeth dramatically. Most whitening only works on natural enamel, so it is important to consider the colouration of fillings and crowns in relationship to how the natural teeth will be impacted by the whitening process.

Tooth whitening is only a temporary solution if you are constantly re-staining the teeth with coffee, wine, smoking or other elements that can cause discolouration.  It is not uncommon to touch up teeth whitening from time to time.

REASONS FOR TOOTH WHITENING:

There are a number of factors that can contribute to the discolouration of teeth. Stained teeth can come from habits like coffee drinking and smoking, but it can also be caused by certain medications as well.  An excess in fluoride during developmental years could leave a discolouration pattern known as fluorosis, and of course the normal wear and tear of the outer tooth layer will naturally result in discolouration over time.

WHAT DOES TOOTH WHITENING INVOLVE?

Typically, tooth whitening takes two visits to the dentist.  Once to create impressions of the teeth for the fabrication of clear plastic trays, and the second to fit the trays and instructions to be given.  Trays are then used with a special whitening solution twice per day for 30 minutes, or overnight for a couple of weeks until the desired results are achieved.  Naturally, the duration of treatment will dependent on the intensity of the staining to begin with.
