Do It Yourself – Routine Checks

Do It Yourself – Routine Checks

In addition to making regular visits to your local dentist, there are steps that you can take to maintain a healthy mouth. Our dentists are highly qualified to look carefully in your mouth for any irregular signs and symptoms, however there are a few easy steps that you can do as well within your daily routine.

1. Look for warning signs of periodontal disease (gum disease).

Keep an eye for any red, shiny, puffy, sore or sensitive gums. Take note if you experience any bleeding when you floss or brush, or have any problems with constant bad breath. One of the main reasons why adults lose their teeth is because of gum disease. Try to be aware of any of these symptoms so you can prevent any oral risks.

2. Look for warning signs of tooth decay.

If you notice any of the following symptoms, visit your dental team at Signal Hill Dental Centre: teeth that are sensitive to cold or hot temperatures, sweetness, or any sort of pressure. These symptoms do not directly indicate that you have tooth decay concerns, however they are issues that should be brought to the attention of your dentist.

3. Look for warning signs of oral cancer.

Close to 42,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer within the year. In your daily routine, check the 3 most common areas (sides and bottom of your tongue, and the floor of your mouth) for any symptoms:

  • Red or white patches
  • Small lumps and thickening on areas of your mouth
  • White or red patches
  • Unexplained oral bleeding
  • Open sore that last longer than a week

If you have any questions or concerns, our team would be happy to answer them.
