How Coffee Can Stain Your Teeth and How To Prevent It

Coffee Stains Tips

Most of us start our days out with a hot cup of coffee, but what is it doing to our teeth?

How Coffee Stains Teeth

The enamel of your teeth is actually the hardest substance in the body. However, enamel contains microscopic pits and ridges that food and drink can get stuck in.

The pigment in dark-colored drinks such as coffee, tea and pop can become embedded into the ridges. If proper action isn’t taken, these yellow-ish stains can become permanent.

How To Prevent It

Giving up coffee or other dark-colored drinks is the most effective way to prevent these stains but most people aren’t willing to do that. If you don’t want to give it up completely, try having your coffee at specific times during the day rather than sipping it throughout the day. After you finish your coffee, wash your mouth out with water or brush your teeth to prevent staining.

Although it will not protect your teeth 100% from coffee stains, drinking coffee through a straw can also help.

Brushing regularly and visiting your dentist regularly to remove surface stains will help as well.
